Hartford grad Jerry Kelly finishes strong at Travelers, 4-under after first round

Jerry Kelly has always had at least one solid round in his 12 previous appearances at the Travelers Championship. The University of Hartford grad who lives in Madison, Wis. admitted he has been plagued with inconsistency recently and is working on correcting that in 2010.
He began this week’s Travelers with a solid first-round number of 66 on Thursday and he hopes to build on his start of 4-under.
“I’ve been playing well but I haven’t been consistant,” Kelly said. “I’ve been working more on my fundamentals and putting in a lot of work with my coach (Jim Schuman, Kelly's swing coach and brother-in-law).
The extra work certainly paid off in the first round as he closed strong to keep him among the leaders.
He birdied three of the last five holes on 14, 15 and 17 and he had to work for those birds. He landed in the bunker on all three holes. He left himself with an 18-foot put out of the bunker on 14 and made the putt. On 15, he left himself with a six-foot putt that he made for birdie and on 17 he left himself with about a nine-foot putt that he made for his final bird.
“I feel good about my round,” Kelly said. “I made some great shots and some good putts, especially with the birdies on 14, 15 and 17. That shot (out of the bunker) on 15 was the best shot I had all day.”
Kelly’s best round at the Travelers was a 65 and he shot it twice - in the second round in 2001 and first round in 2009. His best overall finish at the Travelers was a tie for fourth in 2005 with a four-round total of 268.
