Stegmaier among Travelers qualifiers

Brett Stegamier of New Haven Country Club fired a 5-under-par 67 Monday at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield to be one of four qualifers for this week's Travelers Championship.
Stegmaier, who now resides in Ridgefield, joins Jason Caron (Jupiter, Fla.), Chris Rogers (Nashville) and Derek Gillespie (Oshawa, Ontario) in the tournament beginning Thursday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
Gillespie made seven birdies to get into a three-way sudden death playoff at 4-under 68 against former PGA Tour winner Frank Lickliter and Tarik Can. Gillespie, who plays on the Canadian Tour, birdied the second hole to grab the fourth spot.
Caron, who last played in a PGA Tour event when he failed to make the cut at the 2009 Honda Classic, had birdies on five of the last seven holes to share medalist honors.
Rogers will be playing in his second PGA event of 2010 after finishing tied for 65th in the St. Jude Classic. Rogers overcame consecutive bogeys on No. 11 and 12 as he posted three of his seven birdies on the final six holes.
Stegmaier last played in the Travelers in 2006, when he received a sponsors exemption. He missed the cut.
Among the players who failed to qualify were former PGA Tour pros Bob Heintz (70), who graduated from Yale University, Robert Gamez (72) and Len Mattiace (74).
